Robert Gray (1945-2025) grew up on the north coast of New South Wales and left school early to work on a local newspaper. Since the age of 18 he lived in Sydney, where he worked as an advertising copywriter, mail sorter and mainly as a buyer for a bookshop. He coached students in Shakespeare and in his own work and had a devoted interest in painting.
