A mother, wife and survivor of the 1994 Tutsi Genocide in Rwanda, Faina lives in Hobart, where she works and advocates for preservation of genocide history and promote education for future generations. A co-founder and long-standing member of the Rwandan Australian Friendship Association Inc., trading as the Rwandan Coffee Club, which fosters connections between Rwandan and Australian communities while promoting Rwanda's culture, history, and heritage. In 2003, she pioneered Australia's Annual Kwibuka Remembrance Day in Hobart to honour victims and survivors of the Tutsi Genocide. The commemoration continued for more than two decades and expanded to other Australian states.In 2019, she was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to research how communities affected by genocide can preserve history while creating spaces for healing, education, and remembrance. Drawing on lived experience and community leadership, she transforms personal experience into education, fostering hope, understanding, and a commitment to preventing prejudice, discrimination, and violence.
