Kate Grenville In Conversation

A literary mystery. A century-old archive. A story waiting to be uncovered.

Join the Mudgee Readers’ Festival for a special satellite event with acclaimed Australian author Kate Grenville, discussing her new book, The Country Schoolmaster: A Mystery in 88 Letters.

When Grenville discovers a file of old letters about a country schoolteacher in colonial New South Wales, she finds herself drawn into a mystery of alleged cruelty, small-town rivalries and a troubled family relationship. But as the evidence unfolds, one question remains: was Joseph Connor a villain, or a victim?

Blending historical investigation with a novelist’s imagination, The Country Schoolmaster is a compelling exploration of storytelling, truth and the tantalising gaps in our understanding of the past.
