Angelica Mesiti

Angelica Mesiti is a leading Australian contemporary artist who was selected to represent Australia in the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. Mesiti’s practice is marked by an attentiveness to non-linguistic forms of communications and a fascination with performance. Her work translates sonic and gestural vocabularies into detailed studies of human interaction and culture through the mediums of video, installation, performance and music. In 2017 a suit of Mesiti’s video works were presented in a major solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia as part of a series focused on leading contemporary practitioners. Mesiti’s exhibitions include Relay League, Artspace, Sydney (2017); Tossed by Waves, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne (2017); Rock the Kasbah, The Institute of Islamic Culture, Paris (2017); and Sugar Spin – You, Me, Art and Everything, Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2017). She was recently shortlisted for the 9th edition of the prestigious Le Prix Meurice award for contemporary art and undertook a residency at the Centre National de la Danse in Paris, and was awarded the Australia Centre for the Moving Image Commission in 2013. Mesiti is represented by Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne, and Galerie Allen, Paris.
