About the authors
Moreno Giovannoni is the author of the critically acclaimed The Fireflies of Autumn and a freelance translator of long standing. His essay 'The Percheron' was published in Southerly and selected for The Best Australian Essays in 2014. He was recipient of the prestigious Deborah Cass Prize in 2016.

Helen Trinca's biography of Madeleine St John was co-winner of the Prime Minister's Prize for Non-fiction in 2014. As a journalist, she has held senior positions at The Australian, including deputy editor, managing editor, European correspondent and editor of The Weekend Australian Magazine.

Benjamin C. Fortna is a professor of history and director of the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona. He has published numerous books on the Ottoman Empire, the early Turkish Republic and modern Turkey, and has appeared on the BBC programs Who Do You Think You Are? and The Ottomans: Europe's Muslim Emperors.
